About this camp

The UMass Boston AI Summer Camp is a five-week, project-based program designed for middle and high school students. Participants will gain practical skills in various AI domains, including machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, generative AI, robotics, and AI ethics. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, moving students from foundational concepts to developing portfolio-ready projects. Students will learn to train AI models, work with AI coding assistants, and apply AI to real-world problems. The program aims to equip students not only with technical AI skills but also with critical thinking, problem-solving, and presentation abilities, which can be valuable for college applications and future research endeavors.

Each week offers a modular curriculum, allowing students to enroll for one or multiple weeks, progressively deepening their AI knowledge. Activities include daily lectures by professors, live lab sessions led by PhD students, and guided practice with AI Institute assistants. Students will engage in projects such as building personal image classifiers, creating custom object detection systems with robotic arms, and developing AI chatbots. The camp culminates in an "AI in ONE Day" event where students present their projects.

What a typical day looks like

A typical day includes a 3-hour lecture on AI theories and real-world cases, followed by a 3-hour live lab session led by a PhD student, and two hours of guided practice with assistants.
