Students build and keep real robots and autonomous drones, writing authentic Python code to bring machines to life, fostering a valuable engineering mindset.
The Research Ignited AI Robotics & Autonomous Drone Lab is a live, online program designed for middle and high school students (grades 6-12) to build and program real robots and autonomous drones using Python. Students will engage in hands-on projects, including programming an autonomous obstacle avoider robot that uses sensors to detect objects and navigate, and a smart vision sorting bot that utilizes computer vision (OpenCV) to recognize and sort objects by color. The curriculum also covers AI-inspired drone challenges where students write autonomous flight logic for a real drone, focusing on search patterns and responsive behaviors. The program emphasizes writing real Python code, wiring real sensors, and debugging hardware, providing a genuine engineering experience. Students will build with and keep a professional robotics kit, including a SunFounder PiCar-X AI robot car with Raspberry Pi and a CoDrone EDU. The program aims to develop technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a debugging mindset, preparing students for future academic and career pursuits in AI, robotics, and engineering.
A typical day involves interactive lectures introducing AI/ML concepts, followed by live coding walkthroughs and guided, project-based learning in small-group sessions.
This program is ideal for motivated middle and high school students (grades 6-12) who are curious about AI, robotics, and drones, and want to gain hands-on experience building and programming real hardware with Python, regardless of prior coding experience.
