About this camp

PROMYS is a highly selective six-week residential summer program at Boston University designed for high school students aged 14-18 who are deeply motivated to explore the creative world of mathematics. The program emphasizes mathematical discovery and problem-solving, rather than rote learning. Participants engage in intensive efforts to solve challenging problems in Number Theory, designing their own numerical experiments, formulating conjectures, and justifying their ideas through mathematical proofs. Returning students have opportunities for advanced seminars and original research projects. The program fosters rigorous habits of mind, independent thought, creativity, and precise expression within a collaborative and non-competitive community of peers, counselors, and research mathematicians. Students gain skills in mathematical exploration, critical thinking, and written and oral communication of mathematical ideas, culminating in presentations and written findings. The program aims to cultivate a deep understanding and passion for mathematics, preparing students for future academic and professional pursuits in STEM fields.

What a typical day looks like

Each weekday begins with a Number Theory lecture from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by students receiving daily problem sets and meeting with their counselors for feedback. The rest of the day is largely unstructured, allowing students to work independently or collaboratively on problem sets, participate in exploration labs, or attend advanced seminars.

Best suited for

The ideal student is between 14-18 years old, has completed 9th grade, is not yet enrolled in college, and possesses a strong desire and ability to think deeply about fundamental mathematical principles.
