About this camp

The Northeastern University Accelerate Pre-College Programs - Ethics & Emerging Technologies program helps students develop ethical reasoning skills while exploring the fundamentals of emerging technologies. Students will identify and describe at least three emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, text mining, and virtual and augmented reality. They will learn to apply core ethical reasoning skills to evaluate the ethical implications of these technologies. The program also focuses on recognizing and applying interdisciplinary perspectives, where students will compare approaches to evaluating the ethical impact of emerging technologies from various disciplines like history, English, philosophy, politics, international affairs, and economics. Students will practice modeling interactions between individuals and learn how these models can predict outcomes of wide-scale interactions. They will also learn to construct valid arguments, reason inductively or probabilistically, and evaluate arguments based on these reasoning types. A key activity involves creating simple computer simulations to test hypotheses related to ethical questions in technology.

What a typical day looks like

A typical day involves classes led by a philosophy faculty member, where students discover, debate, and apply ethical theories to understand the moral dimensions of emerging technologies. There are also opportunities for academic collaborators and guest speakers from other disciplines to discuss challenges like algorithmic bias and information bubbles. Students will also learn to create simple computer simulations.
