RISE offers a unique opportunity for high school students to conduct intensive, hands-on research alongside distinguished Boston University faculty and researchers, contributing to real scientific projects.
The Boston University Research in Science & Engineering (RISE) program is a six-week intensive summer experience for rising high school seniors passionate about STEM. The program offers two distinct tracks: the Internship Track and the Practicum Track. In the Internship Track, students are fully immersed in university laboratory research for approximately 40 hours per week, working alongside faculty mentors, postdoctoral fellows, or graduate students. They contribute to ongoing scientific projects, gaining valuable technical and analytical skills. Research areas can include astronomy, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, medical laboratory research, neuroscience, physics, psychology, and public health.
The Practicum Track provides a more structured, collaborative research environment. In 2026, this track focuses on Computational Neurobiology or Data Science. Students in the Practicum track attend daily two-hour lectures in the morning, followed by four hours of guided group research in the afternoon. Both tracks culminate in a Poster Symposium where students present their research findings to the Boston University community. Additionally, all RISE students participate in weekly workshops covering topics such as the scientific process, research ethics, reading academic papers, preparing poster presentations, and networking.
For the Internship track, students are fully immersed in laboratory activities and research from approximately 9 am to 5 pm daily. For the Practicum track, students attend a two-hour lecture in the morning followed by four hours of guided lab work in the afternoon.
The program is ideal for academically motivated rising high school seniors with a strong interest in STEM fields who want to gain hands-on, university-level research experience.
